Building an angled tiered display shelf

Difficulty: easy. Time: 15 minutes design, 40 minutes making. Best method: laser-cut plywood.

A tiered display shelf steps small items up and back so every row is visible: think spice jars, paint bottles, trophies, or collectibles. This generator builds two side panels with a row of angled slots, a set of shelves that pass straight through those slots, and a back panel that finger-joints the sides together. Because the slots are angled, the shelves tilt back slightly so items lean into the display instead of sliding off. The Assembled 3D tab shows the tiers seated so you can check the tilt and spacing before cutting.

What You'll Need

  • Laser cutting: 3 to 8 mm plywood or MDF. Thicker sheet makes a sturdier riser; measure it with calipers.
  • 3D printing: any rigid filament. 4 to 6 mm panels give the through-slots enough strength.
  • Glue: PVA wood glue and clamps or bands to hold the frame square.
  • Finishing: light sandpaper for the slot edges and joint tabs.

Step 1 - Overall size

Width is how wide the shelves span between the sides, Depth is how far the shelves reach front to back, and Height is the full height of the side panels. The shelves overhang the sides slightly so they read as clean ledges. Thickness must match your sheet, because the slots and finger joints are derived from it.

Step 2 - Tiers and tilt

  • Shelves sets how many tiers there are. They are spaced evenly up the usable height with a margin at the top and bottom.
  • Angle tilts every shelf back by the same amount. A small angle is nearly flat; a larger angle leans items back so they display and stay put.
  • Finger width controls the joint tab size where the back panel meets the sides.

Step 3 - Check the assembly

Switch to the Assembled 3D tab and orbit the shelf to confirm the tiers clear each other and the tilt suits what you plan to display. The flat SVG view shows both slotted sides, the back, and every shelf laid out for cutting.

Choose Your Build Method

Before you cut

  1. Measure your sheet with calipers and set Thickness to what you measured, so the shelves grip their slots.
  2. Run a test on one side panel and one shelf, and check the shelf slides through the angled slot with light pressure.
  3. Cut the slots and finger joints before the outlines where your software lets you, so panels do not shift once free.

Glue up

  1. Finger-joint the back panel between the two sides and check the frame is square before the glue grabs.
  2. Slide each shelf through its matching slots so it passes cleanly across both sides.
  3. Glue the shelves into their slots if you want a permanent riser, or leave them dry for a knock-down display, then clamp until cured.

Make It Yours

  • Set the angle to zero for flat shelves that suit framed prints or flat cards.
  • Engrave labels along the front edge of each shelf before cutting.
  • Add more tiers and reduce the depth for a compact stepped spice or nail-polish rack.
