# Making a personalized family tree sign with the Family Tree of Life Generator

> personalized family tree wall signs with name tags and a banner

A family tree of life makes a heartfelt keepsake for a wedding, an anniversary, a reunion, or a housewarming. Type in each family member, choose a tree style and tag shape, and the tree fans the names across its canopy so it always looks balanced, from two names to twelve. Add a ribbon banner with your family name, style it with an Inspirational Palette, pick Stacked or Inlay assembly, then export for print, for the laser, or for a 3D printer.

## What you need

- **Printing:** any home printer or a print shop, plus paper or card and a frame
- **Laser engraving:** a wood, acrylic, or slate blank and the layered SVG
- **Layered laser cutting:** two wood tones, one for the tree and one for the tags and banner, plus glue for Stacked mode (Inlay drops the pieces in flush)
- **3D printing:** a printer and filament in one or more colours, using the exported STL or 3MF
- **Extras:** nothing to install, the tree is drawn in your browser

## Step 1 - Add your family members

Type each name into the list and add or remove rows as needed, up to twelve. Tags fan out across the canopy automatically and the branches re-grow to reach every one, so the tree always stays balanced.

## Step 2 - Pick a tree style, tag shape, and palette

- **Tree style:** choose from several silhouettes, from a full Leafy Tree or Pine to a Branchy Tree, Sapling, Bonsai, and more.
- **Tag shape:** heart, circle, apple, dove, or bird.
- **Inspirational Palette:** Wood, Pastels, Ocean, Earthy, Nordic, Mono, and more, the same palettes used across the other tools, which set every layer's colour at once.
- **Shuffle layout:** reshuffle where the tags sit across the canopy until you like the arrangement.

## Step 3 - Choose Stacked or Inlay and a backing board

In **Stacked** mode the tags and banner sit on top of the tree and the names engrave, which suits a raised two-tone wood sign. In **Inlay** mode the tree carries cutouts and the tags, banner, and names drop in flush, which suits a single-panel sign or 3D print. Add a rounded, rectangle, or oval backing board behind it all, or turn the board off.

## Step 4 - Add the banner and export

Pick a ribbon banner style, type your family name, and choose fonts for the names and the banner. Then download a high-resolution **PNG** or **print SVG**; a **laser SVG** where the board, tree, tags, and names are separate cut and engrave groups; or an **STL/3MF** for 3D printing. Open the SVG in the Design Editor for further edits.

## Printing

### Home and print-shop printing

1. Pick a size preset or set a custom width and height for your frame.
2. Print the PNG at home, or send the SVG to a print shop for a larger poster.
3. Choose a preset with enough contrast between the tree and the background for your paper.
4. Frame it, or mount it on card as a gift.

## Laser Engraving & Cutting

### Engraving and layered cutting from the SVG

1. Download the SVG for laser; the board, tree, tags, and names are separate cut and engrave groups.
2. For a single-board keepsake, set the tree to Engrave and the names and banner text to Engrave, then cut the outer edge.
3. For a raised two-tone sign, use Stacked mode: cut the tags and banner from a lighter wood and the tree from a darker one, then stack and glue them.
4. For a flush single-panel sign, use Inlay mode: the tree, tags, banner, and names all cut so the lighter pieces drop into the tree cutouts.
5. Test on a small offcut, then run the full sign.

## 3D Printing

### Printing the tree from the STL or 3MF

1. Set the extrusion depth, then download the **STL** or the multi-colour **3MF**.
2. The board, tree, tags, and names come through as stacked layers so you can print or paint them in different colours.
3. Slice as usual; no supports are needed for the flat layered stack.
4. Print, then hang it or stand it as a keepsake.

## Make it yours

- Walnut family tree with heart tags and an 'Our Family' banner as a wedding or anniversary gift.
- A grandparents' tree with every grandchild's name in an apple tag.
- A reunion sign with a dozen names fanned across a wide canopy.
- A Bonsai or Rooted tree style for a different silhouette on the same names.
- A modern slate version with circle tags for a contemporary living room.
- A flush Inlay sign with light-wood tags and names dropped into a darker tree.
- A multi-colour 3D print from the 3MF for a standing desk or shelf keepsake.
- An engraved plaque on wood or slate with names and family name burned in.
